It didn’t start out too well for the freshman team at Kirby Park against Holy Redeemer. Early in the first quarter after making a first down on a fake punt, Holy Redeemer’s QB ran a keeper around the right side for 40 yards and scampered into the end zone giving the Royals a 6-0 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, Dylan Pegg ran the ball back 70 yards for a TD. Jordan Zezza connected with Josh Pimental for the two point conversion and the Warriors led at the end of the first quarter 8-6.
Early in the second quarter, the Warriors jumped out to a 14-6 lead when quarterback Jordan Zezza dumped a short pass off to Cody Schmitz. Schmitz scampered 50 yards for a touchdown, with the two point conversion being no good. Holy Redeemer’s quarterback, #8, ran the option with skill. Several times he was able to get outside on the Warrior defense and pick up good yardage. In addition, Holy Redeemer converted on its second fake punt. However, the Warrior defense stiffened at the right time and held Redeemer out of the end zone. Late in the 2nd quarter, Cody Schmitz took a second screen pass in for a touchdown. Schmitz took the 2 point conversion in to make the half time score Warriors 22, Holy Redeemer 6. Robert Burton and Jeff Skursky led the defense with some crushing tackles in the first half.
Holy Redeemer started the 3rd quarter with a successful on side kick. The Royals quarterback ran a keeper around the right side to make the score 22-12 at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Cody Schmitz had a 60 yard run from scrimmage around the left side to make the score 28-12. Jordan Zezza had an interception near the end of the game that stifled a Holy Redeemer Drive.
The offensive line did a great job of giving Zezza protection to pass. They also opened some gaping holes for Schmitz to run through. Defensively, the line and the secondary played extremely well—they hit hard and they had good pursuit to the ball. Overall, this was a dominating performance by the Warrior freshman team
