Summary:

The Nanticoke Trojans held on to defeat the Warriors 14-7 Friday night at Jake Sobeski Field.    A late fourth quarter Warrior drive stalled on the Trojan 11 yard line to seal the victory.

You had the feeling that this game might not turn out well for the Warriors when the two teams went to the locker rooms at halftime tied at 0-0.    The Warriors moved the ball well in the first half behind the running of Jeff Skursky, Jason Wilson, and QB Ryan Gorki--that is, they moved the ball from their own 30 to the Trojan 20.   However, three drives stalled in Trojan territory leaving the Warriors with a goose egg on the scoreboard.  A 37 yard field goal attempt by AJ Lenkaitis was the closest the Warriors came to scoring in the first half.

In the third quarter, the Warriors again came out driving the ball.  On a second and 10 from the Trojan 37 yard line, Ryan Gorki dropped back, looking for Ryan Murray running a slant over the middle.  Safety Kyle Gavrish stepped in front, picked off the pass and ran 69 yards for the game’s first score.      A 31 yard pass from Trojan QB J.T. Levandowski to Tyler Myers—Nanticoke’s only completed pass of the night—set up a second Trojan score with 11:49 remaining in the game.

Kyle Borton entered the game at QB and drove the Warriors 91 yards in 17 plays and the Warriors scored their first TD with only 4:21 remaining in the game.   The TD came on a 10 yard pass from Borton to TE Jeremy Seabridge.   The Warriors hemmed in the Trojans deep in their own territory—who went three and out.   A good punt return by Ryan Murray gave the Warriors good field position in Trojan territory.   A 1st down run by Jason Wilson brought the ball to the 11 yard line and a 2nd and 3 with just about 2 minutes remaining.  After that, the Warriors could not gain another yard.   On 4th and three, the Warriors had a mixup in the backfield and the game ended.

Nanticoke Area played a solid game on defense.  They held the Warriors to 118 yards rushing on 50 rush attempts--a little more than 2 yards per rush.  While the Warriors outgained the Trojans by better than a 2-1 margin, two Trojan interceptions made the difference in the game.  In addition, the Warriors were unable to finish drives and make big plays.

The Warriors fall to 1-4 on the season and take on Holy Redeemer at home next week.

WEST PITTSTON - Nanticoke Area dedicated its 14-7 victory over the Wyoming Area Warriors to teammate Danny Green on Friday evening at Anthony "Jake" Sobieski Field.

"We played with heavy hearts for our teammate Danny Green. His father had passed away earlier during the day," Nanticoke Area coach Ron Bruza said. "I'm proud of every member of our football on how we were able to overcome such shocking adversity."

After a scoreless first half Nanticoke Area's Kyle Garvish stepped in front of an errant Ryan Gorki pass and returned it 69 yards for the game's first score. Alec Norton's point after gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead.

After stopping the Warriors, the Trojans mounted a nine-play drive. Tyler Myers hauled in a J.T. Levandowski 32-yard pass on Wyoming Area's 2-yard line.

Levandowski was then able to score from 2 yards out on the next play. Norton's extra point extended Nanticoke Area's lead to 14-0.

With the football deep in Warriors' territory, Norton intercepted a Gorki pass at the 11-yard line.

"We bent but we did not break," Bruza said.

With the ball resting on the 4, Levandowski called his own number only to have the ball jarred loosed by Wyoming Area's Jeff Skursky. The Warriors Farrod Condry pounced on the football to thwart the drive.

Wyoming Area then embarked on a 19-play drive that covered 91 yards. The key was when Kyle Borton hit Skursky with a 30-yard pass on 4th and 10 to keep the drive alive.

Two plays later Borton hit a wide open Jeremy Seabridge with a 10-yard scoring strike. Danielle Stillarty then split the uprights to cut the Nanticoke Area lead to 14-7.

Norton put an end a late Wyoming Area drive whe he recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter.

Nanticoke Area ran out the clock to secure the win.

Gavrish keys Trojans victory - Times Leader

WEST PITTSTON — Kyle Gavrish made the game’s biggest play and a whole lot of little ones.

The senior safety returned an interception 69 yards to break a scoreless tie in the third quarter and was the game’s leading tackler while helping Nanticoke to a 14-7 victory over host Wyoming Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference football game Friday night.

“Kyle is a first-class player for us,” Nanticoke coach Ron Bruza said. “He’s our team leader. He’s our captain. He’s our unsung hero.

“He leads by example.”

Gavrish came up quickly from the secondary against the run to make 10 tackles, including one for a loss, and assist on seven others. He used similar aggression to jump into the path of Wyoming Area pass plays, breaking up one at the goal line and jumping in front of a slant pass for the play that opened the scoring with 4:52 left in the third quarter.

When he broke on the ball, Gavrish made the interception on the fly and just needed one block from Ron Kotz to clear the path to the end zone.

“I saw one guy to beat, then I saw a blocker and it was all open field from there,” Gavrish said.

Although the game was scoreless before Gavrish’s interception, Nanticoke had taken just one snap in Wyoming Area territory – from the 47 – while the Warriors had applied constant pressure, taking 27 in Trojans territory.

“Our kids played with a lot of heart,” Bruza said. “They bent, but they did not break.”

Nanticoke (2-3) carried the momentum following Gavrish’s touchdown.

Pat Hempel ran 25 yards on third-and-8 for the first Nanticoke first down in more than 25 minutes. The Trojans then completed their only pass when J.T. Levandowski hit Tyler Myers for 31 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter. Levandowski carried it in from the 3 on the next play for a 14-0 lead.

Wyoming Area (1-4) stopped the next Nanticoke possession after it reached the 1, then threatened to pull off a comeback for its second straight victory.

The Warriors went 91 yards in 17 plays in just 4:20 to score on a 10-yard pass from Kyle Borton to Jeremy Seabridge.

They made it back to the Nanticoke 10 with 1:09 left but a backfield mix-up on fourth-and-2 led to a fumble and game-clinching turnover. Alec Norton, who had an earlier interception, recovered the fumble.

Wyoming Area reached Nanticoke territory on all three first-half possessions, but never got closer than the Trojans 18.

Nanticoke stopped Wyoming Area twice on downs and another drive ended in a missed field goal.

“We had our opportunities, but we didn’t finish drives,” Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer said.

Bruza presented the game ball to senior Danny Green following the game. Green’s father died earlier in the day.

“We won this game for Danny Green,” Bruza said.

PREVIEW:

Preview: The Warriors and Trojans both enter Friday night’s contest with a 1-3 record.  The Warriors notched their first victory against Hanover last week while the Trojans’ only win was a 48-0 trouncing of Columbia Montour Vo. Tech (CMVT) in Week 2.    In general, both teams have struggled all year on offense.

The Trojans are led by Senior RB Pat Hempel(#26).  He has rushed for 202 yards on the season with an 8.4 yards per carry average.  Hempel also has 3 receptions for 20 yards.  Junior Tyler Hanna (#22) has 8 receptions for 73 yards and Senior Kyle Gayrish(#17)  has 6 receptions, averaging 13 yards a reception.     Senior Joe Levandowski(#11) has thrown for 371 yards:  4 TDs and 2 Ints—with a completion percentage of 36%.    Last week, the Trojans were shutout by Meyers 39-0.

The Warriors found some bright spots last week on offense in their victory over the Hawkeyes.  Underclassmen Rob Wargo (42 yds), Jason Wilson (37 yds) and Ryan Gorki (37 yds) accounted for most of the 114 yards rushing compiled by the Warriors.   QBs Ryan Gorki and Kyle Borton combined for 134 yards passing, with Ben Steve catching 4 for 70 yards and Jeremy Seabridge adding 2 receptions for 31 yards.     Interceptions by Farrad Condry and Ryan Murray were critical plays in the game.

This should be a competitive game.  The Trojan’s Hempel may be the best athlete on the field, so the Warriors defense will have to contain him.     For the first time this year against Hanover, the Warriors were able to spread the field with their passing game—which makes running between the tackles a little easier.   Wargo and Wilson are welcome additions to the running game.   This is a must-win for the Warriors if they are to keep their hopes alive for a credible season.  Nick Perugini
