Warriors prevail - Citizens Voice

HANOVER TWP. - Wyoming Area head coach Randy Spencer gathered his players in the postgame huddle - the first celebratory one of the 2013 season - and lauded his team's well-earned, if not aesthetically pleasing, victory.

"It was a gritty, gutsy first step in the right direction," Spencer said.

The gritty, gutsy play was exemplified by wide receiver/cornerback Farrad Condry, who dealt with cramps for much of the third quarter. But late in the fourth, Condry intercepted a Jacob Peters pass to cement the win as the Warriors improved to 1-3 with a 20-12 victory over Hanover Area Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

"Coach told me, 'Big plays have to come at the end of the game,'" Condry said. "All I heard from the sideline was, 'Time to step up, time to step up.' He threw the ball and I saw it, so I just went for it."

The Warriors recovered a fumbled punt return by Isaiah Taylor early in the first quarter, and two plays later, Condry caught a 10-yard touchdown pass. Taylor fumbled away another punt return in the first quarter, but he rebounded to rush for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

His first touchdown came from 1-yard out with 6:41 left in the third to cut Hanover Area's deficit to 14-6. His second score, a 3-yard rumble through the line, made it 14-12 with 5:25 to go in the fourth quarter.

Hanover Area's Elido Veras picked off Ryan Gorki for his second interception of the game, tearing the ball away from Condry as the Hawkeyes (1-3) got the ball back with 2:33 left.

"When you're striving and struggling to become a good football team, those are the things that you have to face and have to overcome," Spencer said.

On 4th-and-15 from their own 12-yard-line, Hawkeyes coach Ron Hummer left his offense on the field. Following an incompletion, Hanover Area's defense parted the Red Sea and gave Jason Wilson a 10-yard TD run. A missed extra point kept the Hawkeyes' deficit at 20-12 and gave them the ball with 1:43 left.

But on 1st-and-15, a defensive pass interference penalty was called back, leaving Hummer incredulous.

"We had turnovers in the first half that cost us, but I'm going to tell you what: these officials are terrible in the valley," Hummer said. "You can quote me, please, because that's ridiculous. You call a pass interference, and he waves it off because it wasn't pass interference. The only way he should wave it off is if it was tipped."

After three more incompletions, Wyoming Area took over on downs, escaping with win number one.

"We have a long way to go," Spencer said, "but it was a nice first step in the right direction."

Warriors take advantage of Hawkeyes’ turnovers

HANOVER TWP. — Hanover Area gave the ball away on muffed punts twice early.

Wyoming Area took the ball away on pass plays later to hold on to its first victory, taking advantage of four turnovers to beat the Hawkeyes, 20-12, Friday night.

Ryan Murray recovered a fumble to set up the first touchdown, caught a pass for the second score and made an interception to turn away a Hanover Area threat.

The win helped the defending District 2 Class 2A champion Warriors bounce back from a 54-7 home-field loss to Lake-Lehman that dropped them to 0-3.

“It was tough, but we do have a good team and I knew we could do it,” Murray said.

Farrad Condry caught a pass for the first Wyoming Area score and made an interception with 1:31 left and Hanover Area out of timeouts.

A flag for apparent Wyoming Area pass interference was thrown on the Condry interception, but after the officials consulted about the play, they ruled that there was no penalty.

That decision brought Hanover Area coach Ron Hummer onto the field yelling in anger when the game ended with Wyoming Area kneeling down three times.

“The officials are terrible, quote Ron Hummer,” Hummer said while asking to be quoted about the play to make his displeasure clear. “To make that call, in a situation like that …”

Hanover Area got itself in trouble by muffing punts twice in the first 7:15.

Ryan Gorki hit Condry with a 10-yard pass and Danielle Stillarty hit the first of her two extra points for a 7-0 lead with 8:07 left in the first quarter.

The second fumble resulted in a missed field goal.

Wyoming Area gave up a 50-yard pass play from Jacob Peters to Elido Veras, but held Hanover Area to minus-20 yards on its other plays while taking a 14-0 lead in the first 17 minutes.

The Warriors held following the long pass and Gorki hit Ben Steve for 35 yards to set up the 11-yard touchdown pass to Murray.

When Hanover Area finally put together its first threats, Murray broke up a fourth-down pass from the 14, then intercepted a third-down pass at the 13 in the final two minutes of the half.
